This text was prepared by Lisa Ripperton, using as copytext, Popular Tales from the Norse, by Sir George Webbe Dasent, New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons and Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1888. This was the third edition of this book. This version was selected because it contains all the stories translated by Dasent.

This online text contains all the material later published under the title East o' the Sun and West o' the Moon, but it does not include the very lengthy Introduction, consisting of Origin, Diffusion, Norse Mythology, Norse Popular Tales, and Conclusion. Nor does it contain the Introduction to Appendix, the Note to Introduction to Appendix and the Appendix proper, containing 13 ANANZI stories.

Since this book was first published before 1923, it is in the public domain in the United States. By U.S. law, it entered the public domain 75 years after its first publication.
