This text was prepared by Lisa Ripperton, using as copytext A Little Princess, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1922. This version was selected because it includes a number of color illustrations by Ethel Franklin Betts.

This work was first published in 1905, as A Little Princess, Being the Whole Story of Sara Crewe Now Told for the First Time, by Scribner in New York and Warne in London. This work was preceded in 1887 by the novel Sara Crewe and in 1902 by a play A Little Princess, adapted from the earlier novel. The novel Burnett published in 1905 incorporates the new material introduced in the play.

Since this book was first published before 1923, it is in the public domain in the United States. By U.S. law, it entered the public domain 75 years after its first publication. Since Frances Hodgson Burnett died in 1924, it is also in the public domain in Canada (where an author's published works enter the public domain 50 years after the author's death) and Britain (where works remain under copyright until 70 years after the author's death).
