Front MatterA Word to the Reader of This Book
T HIS is a book about plants and animals. Some of these plants and animals live in the city, some in the country, and some live in both places. Some of them live in the north, some in the south, some in the east, some in the west, and some in all four parts of North America. So you see that, wherever your own home is, you are likely to meet some of the very same plants and animals that are mentioned in this book. It will not matter, however, if you meet different ones instead of the same, since different ones are just as interesting. If you watch them when you meet them, you will see much besides what this book tells you. Perhaps, then, you will know the use of this book. It is partly to tell you interesting facts about plants and animals of different kinds, and it is even more to ask you to look and find out all you can for yourself.
