A Song of School

HURRAH for the crisp September days,

When the air blows fresh and cool!

Hurrah for the joys of home and play,

And hurrah for the joys of school!

for now when the leaves with crimson burn,

Once more to books our eyes we turn,

Glad to study and glad to learn

Life's truth and its goal and rule.

for who would live the life of a dunce,

And join the dullard's clan,

When into his hands was given once

The chance to become a man?

To know the secrets of seas and skies,

To live with the great, the good, the wise,

And by true knowledge to grow and rise

According to God's great plan?

We look with scorn on the boys who shirk;

The girls who loaf we shun:

Each day we fill with honest work,

And every task's well done.

for it's good to toil as well as to play,

To keep all rules, and give up your way,

If it helps you to think, grow wise each day,

And learn how success is won.

Then here's to our friends, who share our joys,

And here's to our teachers true;

And here's to a world of girls and boys,

Who each have a work to do!

And so to our tasks we turn with a will,

Our minds alert, our hearts a-thrill,

Our lives with the truth of God to fill.

I'm ready for school! Are you?

—HENRY HALLAM TWEEDY.

And the child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

—Luke ii. 40.
